Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal Disorders

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated with the discovery that by stimulating specific areas on the skin this in turn affected the physiological functioning of the body's processes. Acupuncture is a scientific system of healing that restores and maintains health by balancing the body's energy by inserting needles under the skin at specific points (acupoints) along energy pathways (meridians), to prevent or cure diseases and/or disorders. It is believed that there are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians and that there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body that connect with them.

It is proposed that acupuncture produces its effects by regulating the nervous system, thus aiding the activity of pain-killing biochemical's such as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the body. One theory suggests that pain impulses are blocked from reaching the spinal cord or brain at various "gates" to these areas. Since a majority of acupuncture points are either connected to (or are located near) neural structures, this suggests that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system.
