CITAHEALTH's Naturopathic FAQs:

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a unique form of primary health care that combines modern scientific research with the art and wisdom of traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed as general practitioners in complementary medicine, providing a full range of diagnostic tests and therapies.

Who should see a Naturopathic doctor?

Naturopathic doctors are trained to treat almost all acute and chronic conditions. Patients are involved in their health program and learn to make effective lifestyle choices. Patients of every age can benefit from Naturopathic care. Someone may seek to work with a Naturopathic doctor on a specific medical condition or may choose Naturopathic medicine as a pro-active means of attaining optimal health.

What happens in the first visit?

The first visit is usually about 45 minutes. In this time a thorough case taking including medical history and relevant physical exams will be covered. Naturopathic medicine focuses on treating the root cause of disease, therefore all factors influencing health are considered. This includes personal and family medical history, diet, lifestyle and mental/emotional status. All of these factors will be taken into account when formulating a specific treatment protocol for the patient.

Are my visits to the Naturopath covered by MSP?

Most comprehensive medical plans have an allowance for Naturopathic medicine. Speak to your employer or health provider to enquire about the amount of coverage offered.

How long does Naturopathic treatment take?

Because Naturopathic treatment is individualized, the course of treatment will vary from patient to patient. Think of it this way: How many months or years have you been dealing with your health concerns? The longer you have had a specific issue, the longer it will take to overcome. Naturopathic medicine does not offer a “silver bullet” or instant cure (these things never last). However, Naturopathic medicine does provide the tools that offer immediate care for symptoms as well as long term solutions to health concerns. Essentially, Naturopathic medicine is for life.

What education does an ND have?

In British Columbia Naturopathic doctors have a minimum of three years under-graduate premedical training, followed by a four year post graduate program at an accredited Naturopathic medical college. To obtain a practice license, each candidate much complete both written and oral board examinations governed and regulated by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of B.C. (CNPBC).
