Pre-placement Medical Examinations

A pre-placement medical examination can:

  • assess physical suitability for a particular job
  • provide baseline data useful for measuring early adverse effects of exposure
  • identify individuals likely to be vulnerable to certain exposures
  • identify established conditions that could be aggravated by certain types of work
  • Our consulting occupational health physicians offer a pre-placement medical evaluation of a candidate's health status, including assessment of emotional status which can help an employer in the assignment of a job applicant.

The purpose of the examination is not to exclude people with any disability from the workforce, but is performed to ensure the physical and mental capacity of the worker is suitable to the demands of the occupation she/he has chosen.

In order to effectively assess the applicant, our consulting physicians need a detailed description of the essential functions of the job being offered. Doctors are available to assist with the preparation of an adequate job description.

The basic pre-placement medical evaluation includes:

  • Occupational / Personal medical and health history questionnaire
  • Health review / Examination with occupational health physician
  • Vision (far / near / colour)
  • Dipstick urinalysis
  • Medical evaluation report to employer (Fitness to Work Report)
  • Note: Confidential medical information is not provided to the employer.

Depending on the anticipated job demands, other tests may be indicated:

  • Spirometry (lung function)
  • Audiogram
  • Detailed vision testing - depth, visual fields, phoria, intermediate vision (VDT workers)
  • Blood analysis
  • Drug testing
  • Express test (5-panel, negative results within 10 minutes)
  • Job-specific pre-screening functional evaluation
  • Physical fitness appraisal
  • Resting ECG
  • Stress ECG
  • TB skin test (and other vaccinations)
  • A Medical Evaluation Report is sent to the employer as soon as all test results are available and will indicate the applicant's fitness to work, including any limitations (temporary/permanent). All medical records will be maintained under the supervision of the consulting physician at CITAHEALTH in a secure and confidential manner as per College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia policy.
