Commercial Driver Medical Examinations

As of September 1, 2003, the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles (OSMV) of BC implemented the National Safety Code's schedule of medical monitoring for commercial drivers.

The Driver Fitness Program at the OSMV and the National Safety Code (NSC) aim to protect public safety by ensuring drivers are fit and able to drive safely. As a result of this, the NSC has a schedule for commercial driver medical examinations that the Canadian provinces, including BC, have adopted.

This schedule requires drivers holding a class 1, 2, 3 or 4 license, or class 5 with endorsements 18, 19 and 20 to take and submit to OSMV a Driver's Medical Examination form upon application for a license and at the following intervals:

Every 5th year (i.e. when the driver is in their 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th and 45th year of age)
Every 3rd year (i.e. when the driver is in their 48th, 51st, 54th, 57th, 60th and 63rd year of age)
Every year for drivers aged 66 and older

CITAHEALTH and our contract physicians have been offering corporate clients and the public Commercial Driver's Medical Exams for several years, providing them with a cost effective, convenient and efficient means to meet provincial regulations.
